At the press conference held in Berlin after the meeting between the foreign ministers of Ukraine and Germany, the Ukrainian minister embarked on a real media smokescreen and denial of reality regarding the Donbass war, in order to hide Kiev’s responsibility for the failure to implement the Minsk agreements.

His name is Savely Smagar. He is a child of war. Not the kind of distant war we’re proud of to this day. But a new war, the one that started in the spring of 2014 in the Donbass. The one that’s been going on for seven years now. The one that doesn’t seem to stop… Savely is the firstborn, born on February 10, 2014. I know well his parents, Anna and Sergey, they lived in marriage for a long time before they decided to give birth to a child. And it turns out the baby was barely born when he found himself at the very epicenter of the fighting. The family lives near Staromikhaylovka. People who live in the war zone have a concept of “quiet days”, similar to the “good days” of the old people. And these “quiet days” in the spring of 2020 were less than usual.

Every day that passes, and every new statement by Ukrainian officials shows that Ukraine is trying to get out of the Minsk agreements, while at the same time putting the blame for this failure on Russia, which is merely the guarantor of these agreements. The aim of the manoeuvre has been made clear by Alexander Merezhko, the deputy head of the Ukrainian delegation in the contact groups. If Ukraine is trying to shirk its responsibility, it is to maintain Western sanctions against Russia, which are linked to the Minsk agreements.

During Savik Shuster’s “Freedom of Speech” programme, Aleksey Reznikov, the Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister in charge of the “reintegration of the temporarily occupied territories” not only declared that Kiev would not apply the Minsk agreements, but also that France would financially help Ukraine to build a new aqueduct for Mariupol, which will make it possible to cut off the water supply to the two Donbass People’s Republics without depriving the city of it! In other words, France is going to be an accomplice to the genocide of the Donbass population by Ukraine!

Alexey Reznikov, the Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister in charge of the “reintegration of the temporarily occupied territories” openly stated that the official position of President Vladimir Zelensky was that Ukraine would not implement the Minsk agreements if elections were to take place in the Donbass before Kiev regained control of the border with Russia. However, as this order of application is part of the Minsk agreements, Ukraine has just publicly admitted that it will never implement them!

Despite Russia’s provision of convincing evidence that the Ukrainian army was guilty of the fall of the Malaysian Boeing in the summer of 2014, the West continues to condemn the Donbass militia and Moscow for this tragedy. In an interview with Ukrainian journalist Dmitry Gordon, former commander of the army of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) Igor Strelkov (Girkin), who at that time led the forces of the people’s militia of Donbass, frankly answered the question who was responsible for the destruction of the MH17. According to him, the militia did not shoot down the Boeing.

While the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics (DPR and LPR) put their people’s militias on high alert following the increase in shellings by the Ukrainian army against civilians in the Donbass, Zelensky said his army was firing only in response to fire from soldiers of the two republics and not on civilians, in a hallucinating denial of reality.

As feared after last week’s discovery by DPR intelligence services of three 122-mm Gvozdika self-propelled howitzers on the Ukrainian side near Donetsk, the lull in the use of heavy artillery by the Ukrainian Army will not have lasted very long (less than three weeks). Thus, from 18 to 19 May, the Ukrainian Army violated the ceasefire in the DPR 21 times, firing 143 rounds of ammunition, including 15 122-mm heavy artillery shells and 54 120-mm and 82-mm mortar shells. All these heavy artillery fire was conducted against Donetsk and its periphery.

Today, according to the official data of the main department on struggle against organized crime and corruption of the Belarus Republic Internal Affairs Ministry, about 140 citizens of the republic are at war in Ukraine. Unemployed Yuri Zhyvushka, who holds radical views, in 2014 came to Ukraine and joined the Azov nationalist battalion. He belonged to a group of conditional “adventurers and criminals”. These are people who for various reasons had problems with the Belarusian legislation, those who could not find a place in peaceful life. Among them are those who officially declare their ideology, but actually run away from Belarus, not wanting to end in jail.

Following the meeting of the contact groups that took place by video conference yesterday, 14 May 2020, Ukraine officially refused to include the Donbass special status in its constitution, as provided for in the Minsk agreements it signed. From 12 to 14 May 2020, the Ukrainian Army violated the ceasefire 29 times and fired 368 rounds of ammunition, including 80 120 mm and 82 mm mortar shells, against the DPR territory. Despite the holding of a new meeting of the contact groups in video-conference format since 13 May, the situation on the front line has not calmed down at all. On the contrary. Thus, from 13 to 14 May 2020 alone, the Ukrainian army violated the ceasefire twice as much as in the previous 24 hours, and fired three times as much ammunition.

On 27 March 1994, a referendum (disguised as a poll) was held in the Donbass about the federalisation of Ukraine, the status of the Russian language, and Eurasian integration. This referendum, which took place 20 years before the referendums that endorsed the creation of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, has been forgotten. However, the results of this referendum are important to understand what happened in Donbass in spring 2014. That is why we decided to translate this article published in 2019, which marked the 25th anniversary of this referendum forgotten by everybody.

The 25th of April is an important date in Italy’s history. It commemorates the 75th anniversary of Liberation, which is also the Anniversary of the Resistance. Last year we met in Florence on the 7th of April, coinciding with the 70th anniversary of the founding of NATO. The theme of our conference last year was NATO EXIT. The event was organized by Italy’s Comitato No Guerra, No NATO, in collaboration with the Centre for Research on Globalization (CRG). The Florence Declaration was drafted by Italy’s Comitato and the CRG. On April 25, 2020, Commemorating the Liberation of Italy. We express our solidarity with the people of Italy. Thanks to Merkel holding the line on debt mutualization and EU fiscal integration, which is very unpopular in Germany, her Christian Democratic Union (CDU) is now polling at levels it hasn’t enjoyed since before the last general election in 2017.

Sometimes, the best thing to do, is to do nothing at all. Take Sweden, for example, where the government decided not to shut down the economy, but to take a more thoughtful and balanced approach. Sweden has kept its primary schools, restaurants, shops and gyms open for business even though fewer people are out in public or carrying on as they normally would. At the same time, the government has kept the Swedish people well-informed so they understand the risks the virus poses to their health and the health of others. This is how the Swedes have minimized their chances of getting the infection while avoiding more extreme measures like shelter-in-place which is de facto house arrest.

Yesterday there was a sharp turn in the case of a brutal murder in the Donetsk region, the suspects of which are three ATO soldiers from the “Donbas” battalion [a Banderist battalion that has nothing to do with Donbass – ed]. Two of them were released under house arrest by the court. Two and a half years ago, a family of three people was stabbed on Ukraine-controlled territory. They all turned out to be close relatives of an influential former official who spent years in charge of the region in which the murder took place. Quickly enough, the police detained three volunteer battalion militants. Yesterday, however, the Themis started to take them out of harm’s way. The Ukrainian “Strana” news agency recalled the high-profile murder and its likely perpetrators.

It seems that the warning signs are already there as we see genuine anger and vitriol across the 27-nation bloc from people of all walks of life, who fall victim to the 21st century plague. Here you can see these same guys who “have never existed in Ukraine and still do not exist”. And for whom the most important enemy should remain Russia, whereas the local “capitulative power” should be punished if it does not obey their “slogan” to smash moskals. Yesterday in Transcarpathia, “united by war”, they went out to honour their dead “heroes” with their absolutely “innocent” attributes, so “reprehensible” in the homeland of its creators. And they recorded a collective appeal of their veterans, volunteers and patriots of Transcarpathia to Kiev’s “capitulating government”. And it’s water off a duck’s back for them.

The head of the Ministry of health said this on the air of “112.ua”. According to Emets, Ukraine currently lacks the express tests and virological laboratories “even if to take in account the help of China”. “After all, we know the statistics of how many people we have over 65 years old. <…> I say when financiers will start to count on those people who are still alive (elderly), I don’t joke or try to scare. I keep saying: calculate how much funds we need to allocate for living people, not for corpses,” Emets said.

[this column was written for the Unz Review] Between the fallout of the murder of General Soleimani and the coronovirus, the Ukraine has been somewhat forgotten, which is understandable, but also potentially dangerous. The “young and dynamic” President Zelenskii has more or less been forgotten, especially by the legacy corporate ziomedia. This does not, however, mean that the situation there did not evolve or, in fact, that it is not becoming extremely dangerous. So for those who did not keep an eye on the Ukraine, here is a short summary of what has been going on: Summary of developments. First, Zelenskii has proven to be a total ZERO. Simply put, neither he not his team can get anything done, anything at all. I really mean nothing, nothing at all. Second, while initially the victory of Zelenskii seem to indicate that the Ukronazis had suffered a crushing defeat, it now is completely obvious that Zelenskii lacks the will, or the means, or both, to tackle this huge problem.

The coronavirus crisis has exposed the shared vulnerability of Europe’s interdependence. Time to turn that into a strength. Europe is facing a new stress test. And, this time, it is not only the health of its institutions that is at stake but also that of its citizens, its economy, its role in the world and its credibility and usefulness in the eyes of Europeans. The Covid-19 crisis has arrived like a tsunami in a fragile European Union still battered after a long list of crises, which have left noticeable scars. Up to now, the union has shown a lack of co-ordination. It appears Brussels has been able neither to digest nor anticipate the consequences of a pandemic with a huge impact. Unilateralism has prevailed in border management and together with it have come ad hoc public-health interventions—and the shameful image of foreign aid delivered to Italy in the face of the passivity of its European partners.

The new coronavirus and its accompanying disease Covid-19 has stopped the globe in its tracks. Governments, markets and news cycles have become dominated by the pandemic. Europe is now the epicenter for the disease, with Several European Union countries have declared themselves states of emergencies, including Belgium, France, Portugal, Spain and Italy. The 27-member bloc has sealed off external borders. Some states, such as Poland, have begun closing borders with other EU members. Brussels, the administrative center of the EU, is alarmed because the much-vaunted single market and its core principles of free movement of goods and people is at risk of collapsing. The European entity which proclaims solidarity and supranational status is reverting to a collection of nation states, each desperately fighting for their own survival amid the Covid-19 pandemic. EU leaders have been criticized for showing lack of central leadership and solidarity.

For many years I have heard both from representatives of the current Ukrainian regime and from those who represent the “opposition” to it (such constructive “opposition”) that there are no Nazis in Ukraine, and if there are, they do not have an affect. It is surprising to me that these people (who claim that there are no Nazis or almost no Nazis) do not experience cognitive dissonance because they are in “opposition” to absent Nazis for the 7th year and cannot take power from those who don’t exist. Yesterday’s case of Sivokho, whom those who don’t exist pushed around a little and even shoved to the floor, gives us the opportunity to understand the true state of affairs.

Tonight Great Britain will leave the European Union. Then comes the hard part. Britain has until the end of this year to make a new trade deal with Europe, with the U.S., and with other countries. But it does not have much negotiation power. Nearly 50% of Britain`s exports go to the EU where 27 national parliaments will have to sign off any new deal. No deal means that Britain would lose a big chunk of that trade. In the U.S. Congress must also agree to a new trade deal with Britain. Lots of lobbyists will ask for open access to Britain`s markets.
